About Julia’s classes

While working as a cellist, I have often missed a health practitioner who had in-depth understanding of the strains and pressures playing an instrument professionally brings. Qualifying as a yoga teacher as well as working in the music industry means that I can bring my in-depth knowledge and understanding to help musicians stay healthy and aware of body and mind.

Through the yoga asana practice Julia helps you to grow awareness of the relationship you have with your body and mind and the"self" as an artist. We observe the way in which we move and think with our instruments under pressure. We use the breath to still the mind and realign the body away from repetitive movement patterns under tension or strain. The practice teaches you to use mind and body in an integral way, clearing the channel between ideas and execution. Ultimately we aim to express more freely what is within us.

Artistry and creativity can be tempered, when ego, judgement and peer pressure play too much of a dominant role in our thinking. The talent musicians have in observing beauty, the eye for detail, and ear to listen can result in a strive for perfection that works against us. To turn these talents to our advantage, we can learn to look at the world with curiosity, less judgement, patience and the understanding of the concept of impermanence. This can reduce the risk of injury, lessen the sense of pressure and increase the focus we need to generate ideas without inhibition. Ultimately savouring the love we feel for our art. How do you operate your body and mind in relation to your drivers and ambition? What if we can we manage ourselves while playing, so that we enable our body to move freely and with more ease, leaving space for creativity to flow naturally?

What if you:

  • Feel excited around your instrument and performing

  • Connect with the music world in a constructive way

  • Use your body and mind in a healthy and sustainable way
